It’s incredibly-appropriate that this would be my first Replay, since it became something of a life-journey anthem by the end of it.

{ lyrics to the song are below in purple, my observations follow them }

How can you see into my eyes, like open doors
Leading you down into my core
Where I’ve become so numb,
Without a soul
My spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold

Until you find it there and lead me back

Wake me up, wake me up inside, I can’t wake up,
Wake me up inside, save me,
Call my name and save me from the dark, wake me up
Bid my blood to run, I can’t wake up
Before I come undone, save me
Save me from the nothing I’ve become

Now that I know what I’m without
You can’t just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real, bring me
To life.

Frozen inside without your touch
Without your love, darling

Only you are the life among the dead

Wake me up, wake me up inside,
Wake me up inside,
Call my name and save me from the dark,
Bid my blood to run,
Before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I’ve become . . .

A track from the debut Evanescence album Fallen, lead singer Amy Lee wrote the song about Josh Hartzler, the man who would become her husband. When she met Hartzler, he was a friend of a friend: a total stranger who did not know her. Yet he could somehow “see inside her” and “bring her to life.”

{ Amy Lee’s epic love story is taken from this site here & not a little reminds me of my own. Met a Cranky-Pants like that once. Insightful, scary-brilliant, can see into your very soul. I’m quite familiar with the type. }

This song took several incarnations with me, from the simple to the very complex, in so many ways. It went from symbolic to exceptionally personal. And I’m not done with it yet! It still pops up and surprises me sometimes, as I get a new and exciting twist with it.

The first time I heard it, I thought {verbatim} . . . ‘if Grimms “Snow White” had a theme song, this would be it.’

Honestly, that was the first identity it had with me because I could hear the ‘Snow White’ mythology between the lines, it was appropriately gothy and angsty, with that ‘touch-horror’ that’s oh-so-Grimms, and even visualize it beautifully, this idea of ‘Snow’ crying out from her frozen, inert soul to the Prince, trapped in her glass coffin but begging to be ‘woken up’.

Well, if there was ever a fairytale joined at the soul with me, it’s Grimms Snow White. I’ve reformed and woven its mythology throughout so many of my stories, and of course, the resemblance . . . but . . .

Later, I used it as my ‘unofficial inspiration anthem’ for a modern gothic fairytale I was penning . . . and OH, did I EVER pick the right SONG for that! {although I had no idea at the time just how appropriate it would be for the journey my characters would undertake}. It ended up earmarking so much of their milestones and cliffhangers, in unexpected ways.

Much to my surprise, there was so much symbology of this hidden between the lines of their journeys, from “sleepwalking and frozen-inert” to “wonderfully awakened and alive” and to this day, I can hear Bring Me to Life and see my characters living through the lines of the song.

Finally, and ever so personal to me, I was undertaking my own journey in life and love, though I never guessed it. There is a fair amount of ‘Snow White’ magic in my own life, hidden behind the backdrop. And this song took me from sleeping walking, to awakened by my Prince Cranky Pants, to now gloriously awake and alive.

The adventure ain’t over! Can’t wait to see what the steps are and how Bring Me to Life takes me there!
